Post-partum depression: 6 facts you need to know to cope with the baby blues

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, I want to take a moment and pay special tribute to all the ladies out there, who dared venture into the crazy whirlwind of motherhood. I say crazy, because as wonderful as being a mother can be, it is just as challenging, draining and overwhelming at times, especially during the first few years. 

In fact, women are at risk to develop postpartum depression during the first twelve months of their baby’s life.
Here are a few facts you need to know in oder to cope with those unwelcome baby blues: 

1. Baby blues are common and to be expected  - In fact, between 70 and 80% of women experience feelings of sadness, commonly known as the “maternity blues” in the first weeks after the birth of their child. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, for about 13% of women, however, the feelings of sadness continue longer than a few weeks, which may signal a more serious condition, called postpartum depression.
